The Manu National Park covers 1,532,860 hectares, and the Manu Reserved Zone another 260,000 hectares. Manu contains 13 different ecological zones ranging in altitude from 200m to 4,000m, meaning that it has an incredible variety of flora and fauna. In 2000, almost 3,000 visitors entered the Manu reserved zone compared with 20,000 who visited the Puerto Maldonado area.
DAY 1: CUSCO - CLOUD FOREST - MIRADOR LODGE :
Leaving from Cusco very early in the morning in our comfortable bus. Ascending to the high mountain area of Paucartambo. On the way we visit the funeral towers or chullpas of Ninamarca. The bus then descents through the mysterious cloud forest full of beautiful orchids, heliconias and primitive ferns. Stopping to give you an opportunity to witness Cock of the Rocks (Rupicola Peruvian) mating ritual. There are also possibilities to observe the Amazonian Umbrella bird (Cephalopteros Ornatus), Trogons (Trogon sp.) and many more. With luck the only South American bear, the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus). In the afternoon we arrive our typical lodge. Showers and toilets available.
DAY 2: MIRADOR LODGE - ATALAYA - MAQUISAPAYOJ LODGE :
After an early breakfast we continue with our minibus: we pass the village of Pilcopata and cross the river of the same name to get to the small port of Atalaya (600 m). On the way we stop at an animal rescue station and to look for orchids. We also go on a walk along the road to look for monkeys and birds. From Atalaya we navigate for about 8 hours in a 15-meter motorized canoe down the Alto Madre de Dios River to get to the lowland rainforest. Today we enjoy the changing landscape and have the opportunity to see wildlife along the rocky banks of the river, such as Fasciated Tiger Herons, Kingfishers, Skimmers, Vultures, caimans and some of the 13 species of monkeys that live in Manu. On the way we stop in Boca Manu, or Fitzcarrald, the main village of Manu. In the afternoon we arrive at Maquisapayoj Lodge (“Place of the Black Spider Monkey”). Evening night walk to see insects, frogs, snakes etc.
DAY 3: MACAW CLAY LICK (BLANQUILLO) & CAMUNGO LAKE AND TOWER :
At daybreak we take the boat to the big macaw clay lick in Blanquillo. From a platform we have an excellent view to observe flocks of colourful macaws (Ara chloroptera, - macao), parrots and parakeets congregating to eat the clay, which is essential for their digestion. Looking through our spotting scope we can see every detail of the birds. Breakfast at the blind. Later we explore some of the trails in Blanquillo to see more species of monkeys and birds. After lunch we visit Camungo oxbow lake: here we take a wooden catamaran to observe Giant River Otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) and different varieties of birds. Nearby we have the opportunity to climb a 42 m observation tower to get a great canopy view and observe birds, such as toucans. In the afternoon we travel upstream to return to Maquisapayoj. After a short break at the lodge we walk about 1 ½ hours through primary rainforest to the mammal salt lick of the reserve. To have the best chance to observe animals - especially the tapir - we spend the night on an elevated platform (with mats and mosquito nets). Your guide will help spotting the tapir with a light. If you prefer you can sleep in double rooms at the lodge.
DAY 4:MAQUISAPAYOJ LODGE-MANU WONDERLAND LODGE:
We leave after Breaskfast MAQUISAPAYOJ Lodge to continue our adventure traveling river UP to Boca Manu On the way if we are very lucky we might see famous Jaguar along the beaches and other species of mammals like capyparas,pecaries and monkeys then we continue (Alto Madre de Dios) to MANU WONDERLAND Lodge.In the evening we will build a bonfire, relax and have some drinks and a BBQ. We will spend the night here.
DAY 5: MANU WONDERLAND LODGE - CUSCO :
We will get up early to take our motorized boat river up to Atalaya where our private bus will waiting for us to take us back to Cusco via the cloud forest and Paucartambo. We will arrive back in Cusco in the late afternoon.
